How can families in Stockholm get started with urban gardening? We designed a concept app that combines knowledge, planning, and community support.

This student project was inspired by Stockholm City’s visual identity, but not officially commissioned.

Overview

This app prototype was created as a student project by four classmates. The app is designed as if it was an assignment from Stockholm City, inspired by their visual identity, but is not an official commission.

The goal was to make urban gardening more accessible for families in Stockholm by combining knowledge, planning tools, and community into one app.

My role

I contributed throughout the entire project, from research and prototyping to testing. I also worked on the UI layout, graphic style, and consistency with Stockholm City’s branding guidelines.

I also collaborated on the interactive prototype in Figma and implemented feedback from user testing.

Problem & Solution

Many families want to try urban gardening but struggle with:

  • Lack of knowledge about plants and seasons
  • Poor planning tools for watering, harvesting, and scheduling
  • No central platform to connect with other urban gardeners

Existing apps cover parts of these needs, but none are designed specifically for urban gardening in Stockholm or include a local community function.

Our app brings everything together in one platform:

  • Plant database & guidelines - start guides and care tips for beginners and experienced gardeners
  • Planning and reminders - calendar with notifications for watering, harvesting, and seasonal tasks
  • Planting box overview - visualize your allotment, track crops
  • Community features - chat, ask for help, share tips
  • Family-friendly design - clear visual and simple navigation

Design process

We worked iteratively in three stages:

  • Iteration 1: Defined target groups (families with children), created storyboards, compared market apps, and made a video prototype.

  • Iteration 2: Developed wireframes and first Figma prototypes. Collected feedback from seminars:
    • Clearer Stockholm City branding
    • More child-friendly features
    • Stronger color and typography choices

  • Iteration 3: Built an interactive prototype, refined based on usability testing. Adjusted color scheme to match Stockholm City’s design manual. Added accessibility features (larger fonts, simpler wording).

Key features

  • Home & Calendar

Overview of upcoming tasks

  • Planting Box

Visualize crops and manage watering

  • Community

Ask for watering help, share inspiration

  • Plant Database

Seasonal tips and plant care

  • Profile

Personal settings and contact with local

administration

Outcome & Learnings

  • Added descriptive text to icons after testers found them unclear
  • Adjusted color scheme, yellow for “Super Deals” for better visibility
  • Increased text size in map view to improve accessibility for seniors

Next steps

If developed further, Green Room could connect to real associations in Stockholm, integrate with the city’s environmental initiatives,

or add gamification for children to engage in gardening.

Outcome & Learnings

  • The prototype provides a clear, family-friendly tool for urban gardening
  • Feedback confirmed that users valued the community aspect and the visual planting box most
  • We learned the importance of branding consistency when designing for a public-sector inspired concept
  • Accessibility (simpler wording, larger text, voice support ideas) became key insights for future iterations
